The Big Day: Our Wedding Photographer

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about the wedding. So far, I’ve told you guys about our colors and the venue. Today I’m sharing the photographer we selected.

I found Maddie of Hart + Sol Photo on A Practical Wedding (this post) when her photos immediately caught my eye. She also said this:

The first, and probably most obvious (although, really, reading some photography advice out there, maybe isn’t so obvious) is that you. are. enough. So many photographers are incredibly talented at their craft. Their images are perfect. They look like something out of a magazine. But what I’ve slowly realized is that those perfect images are the result of meticulously planned shots, ones that require brides and grooms to take time out of an authentic moment in order to produce an image that is technically more perfect. I don’t do that. Yes, I care about your photos (duh), but not to the extent that I will alter the way you experience your day. As far as I’m concerned, your emotions, your people, and you are what makes an image perfect. (Read more here.)

I responded with a fist pump and a whispered “Finally!” and headed home full of excitement. You see, at that point, Aaron and I had searched long and hard for a wedding photographer. I got home, held my breath and showed Aaron her work. He liked them – I exhaled – and contacted Maddie. A few days later we Skyped with her (and her huge dog, Duke!) and everything seemed to click. She has a calming nature about her and that calmed me – something this Type A bride needs.

Aaron and I’s goal for a wedding photographer was finding someone who takes a journalistic approach to documenting a wedding. Someone who can capture candid, raw images that best reflect the sentiment and emotions of the day – nothing too planned or contrived. I want to see photos that  are able to communicate the feelings of the day – photos of eyes that are focused on the events versus eyes locked on the camera. We also were looking for a certain style – dreamy, warm photos.

We found all of that with Maddie. We are so pumped to have her as our photographer. Here are some of the photos that motivated us to reach out to her.

We are so excited to have her.

There’s one catch, of course: Maddie lives in California. She will be flying to Ohio for the wedding, where she’ll meet up with a second shooter. It sounds a little silly to not choose someone local (it tends to generate some eye rolls), but we’re following this rule: At the end of the wedding day, the only thing that’s left is a marriage and the photos, so the photos better be exactly what we want.

xo, emily

p/s: A totally random fact for you. If, for some odd reason you find yourself on the Speedway facebook page, that is me in the cover photo. Ha. It’s a long story….

My band, florist and photographer were all from out of town…you have to go with what works for you. Unfortunately I let my MIL pick the photographer, which I let her do because she so desperately wanted to be involved and she herself is a photographer. Well, let me tell you to anyone reading this…DON’T EVER DO THAT. ;-) I’m eagerly awaiting our 10 year anniversary so I can hire someone of my chosing to do some family portraits because our wedding photos are all garbage.

Oh wow! But that was so nice and trustworthy of you to let her do that!!! Here’s to beautiful 10-year photos!

Also… the out of town thing is so strange. People assume you’re being difficult (“You can’t find anyone here?”) but it was just a matter of getting what we really wanted.
