Finding “Treasure” In Our Kitchen Hutch

By | Haus Hacks, Wallace Woods House | No Comments

We have this gigantic built-in hutch in our kitchen that I absolutely love. The storage is great and I like the scale of this nearly floor-to-ceiling cabinet. We use it as our coffee and liquor bar, tea station, etc.

HOWEVER, I have not paid a single iota of attention to the upper cabinets since we moved in. No organization, no styling, nada. Oh, the shame! And a Kleenex box without a decorative cover? We’re SAVAGES.

Let’s open up those bad boys and I’ll show you what I mean.

Don’t think it’s too bad? Let’s go further in, shall we? Brace yourselves.

Are you judging our liquor choices? Jim Beam and moon shine is how we show our Kentucky pride.

Here are some of the other treasures, all of which make sense (no) to be in a glass kitchen hutch. Packing tape, car seat belt covers, moving discs, broken sunglasses, YETI can holster… oh my!

My favorite treasure includes my coveted and autographed tape copy of The Electric Amish’s hit album, “Barn To Be Wild.” The inscription says, “Emily, show us your ankles.” Please tell me I’m not the only one who got a kick out of this group in the late 90’s! This is also around the time that Weird Al came out with “Amish Paradise” so maybe we were in this weird Amish culture kick?

And then there’s the popsicle sticks with date suggestions for Aaron and I. Between the Amish and the Catholics, we’re a wild group over here. 😉

The first step was PURGE. Lots went to the yard sale pile, other things got trashed and the remainder got moved to their correct spot in the house. And yes, I kept the tape. 😉

Once I saw what I had, I realized I have amassed a decent vintage Ball jar collection. These are super special to me, mainly because they come from my grandma and mom! I also have a soft spot for that Blenko glass water bottle, which was a wedding gift. We did keep our tea supplies in this spot, with the cups up top and the tea bags now stored in the drawers below. If I was really strict on aesthetics, I’d only do white cups, but there are some sentimental, colorful ones that mean too much to let go!

It feels so good to have this space cleared out and looking pretty again! This type of project is one I’ve been doing a lot of lately. They take about 30 minutes, which is about as long as Otto’s naps most days! Yay for feeling productive during a rather unproductive time in my life. 😉

Psssttt… still working on your flower beds? I partnered with Monrovia a few posts back and I’m still using their site! I’m still a total plant novice, but at least I feel like I’ve made some good plant choices lately. Just passing it along in case you walk the flower aisles in pure confusion like I do… haha!
